Federations Cup update

Read the Mustangs fixture list and hear from Ben Davis on the club’s ambitions for this summer’s tournament in Serbia

In a recent interview with Solent Sports News, Mustangs Manager Ben Davis confirmed the club’s intentions to put on a strong showing at the Federations Cup qualifiers this Summer.

“Last year we lost in the final game to a very strong Spanish side, but this year arguably we have a stronger team than we did last year and I expect to be in the final… And the goal is to win.”

The Mustangs will compete in Pool 2 of the tournament in Belgrade between June 12th and 17th 2017, which includes teams from Georgia, Bulgaria, Romania, Austria and the home nation, Serbia.

Last year’s NBL Championship finalists, the London Mets, compete in Pool 3 against Kaunus County (Lithuania), Stockholm Monarchs (Sweden), UKS Deby Osielko (Poland) and the team that beat the Mustangs in 2016, Saint Boi (Spain).

Here’s a look at our group in full:

Pool 2 – Belgrade/Serbia*

1) Southampton Mustangs (GBR)

2) Athletic Sofia (BUL)

3) Atletico Alexandria (ROM)

4) Diving Ducks W.Neustadt (AUT)

5) Beograd ’96 (SRB)

* Georgia’s BSC Armazi Tbilisi, who were originally in our pot, have since been moved to Pool 1. This means the Mustangs will only face four teams in the preliminary round instead of the original five.

The Federations Cup itself will happen in Spain across the same dates featuring two qualified teams from Belgium and one each from Bulgaria, Spain, Sweden and Austria.
